Color Photography. 100 Years from Experiment to Recognition
In 1861, Maxwell proved the principle. A practical method appeared only in 1907 — the Lumière brothers’ Autochrome, slow and fragile. Then came twenty years of failures: Kromogram, Joly, Colorsnap. Eventually, everything was changed by two amateur musicians, frustrated with the quality of color film — and Kodachrome was born. Even then, color remained “unserious” — associated with advertising, magazines, and family albums. It was recognized as art only in 1976, at Eggleston’s exhibition at MoMA, which critics initially tore apart.
